3 tips for setting up a winter garden at home

3 conseils pour aménager un jardin d'hiver chez vous

The winter garden is the new fashionable trend, part of the slow living movement, in other words: the art of slowing down the pace.

This state of mind involves refocusing on the essential, reconnecting with the present moment.

The winter garden is a perfect illustration of this. It is an authentic place where it is good to sit down to read, meditate, rest and relax.

But what exactly is a winter garden?

Originally, it took the form of a greenhouse with a metal structure, almost entirely glazed as an extension of the house. This space is neither insulated nor heated and plants are installed there to recreate the atmosphere of a garden.

Today, the winter garden is understood more broadly, but it keeps the same characteristics since it is still a small, rejuvenating green setting.

We give you 3 tips for creating this small space, regardless of whether or not you have a garden or veranda.
In fact, anyone can create a winter garden at home and we will explain how:

1. Find a place for your winter garden

You can all find a place for your winter garden, whether you live in a house or apartment, with or without a garden and/or terrace. The determining and essential element for your winter garden is brightness. Find a room bathed in light and you’re almost done. It is indeed essential for the good health of your plants.

You can therefore install your winter garden in a corner of the living room, your kitchen, in a bedroom, the bathroom, even a section of wall can be enough. The only rule, in these cases, is to install your space away from radiators.

The goal being to accumulate plants, do not hesitate to get shelves to create a green wall for example, especially if you are installing your winter garden in an apartment.

Finally, don't skimp on the furniture which will be essential to fully enjoy your winter garden.

3. Choosing your plants

Not all plants adapt to winter gardens, since it is a closed room. Your plants will therefore have to withstand temperatures ranging from 5° to 25°C.

Next, choose your plants according to the atmosphere you want to bring to your winter garden:

For an exotic atmosphere: cacti, palm trees, ferns, climbing plants, monstera, etc.

For a Zen atmosphere: bamboo, bonsai and add decorative Buddhas or a small fountain.

To bring a little life to your garden, add a few fruit trees: orange trees, banana trees or even olive trees for example.

You are now ready to spend quality time in your winter garden.
