How to create a Feng Shui garden?

Comment créer un jardin Feng Shui ?

The Feng Shui trend, now widespread in interior design, is gradually finding its place in our gardens.

This ancestral Chinese practice, this art of living, aims to make a living space harmonious, to create balance by facilitating the circulation of vital energy (called Ch'i) allowing us to achieve well-being, happiness and wealth. .

But what is a Feng Shui garden?

To make a garden Feng Shui, you must respect 4 main principles:

- Respect for nature. So make room for natural elements such as wood, plants, stones, water.

- The perfect balance between Ying and Yang. Opposites are necessary for balance: earth and sky, hot and cold, etc. So remember to balance your garden by playing on different elements.

- The harmony between the 5 elements, namely: wood, water, fire, earth and metal. These elements are essential in your outdoor space for a Feng Shui garden.

- Promote the circulation of Ch'i energy. To do this, avoid rectilinear shapes and too sharp angles. Instead, focus on softer curves. Dose the decoration and keep your garden clean to avoid clutter and promote the circulation of good energies.

Your garden in 9 zones

In Feng Shui practice, the garden must be divided into 9 equal zones, each corresponding to a direction: North, North-West, North-East, South, South-West, South-East, West, East and Center whose meanings are the following :

- The center of the garden symbolizes the earth, balance, harmony. This part connects all the areas and must therefore be kept clear.

- The North is associated with careers and winter. The dominant element of this area is water combined with the color blue preferably. All this brings calm and freshness. The dominant form is undulation, sinuosity.
Design ideas : Fountain, pond, flowers and plants such as water lilies, irises, hydrangeas, lotus, etc.

- The North-East is the zone of wisdom. Here the earth is dominant. The colors associated with this space are therefore yellow, orange or ocher. The dominant shape is the square.
Design ideas : a bench to create a space where you can rest and relax. As for plantings, focus on sunflowers, daisies, daffodils, mimosas, etc.

- The Northwest refers to support, communication and fall. Metal is the dominant element in this area. We will therefore find gray, silver or white. The dominant shape is the circle.
Design ideas : a terrace to encourage conviviality combined with white plants (daisies, lily of the valley, jasmine, etc.)

- The South obviously refers to summer but also to reputation and success. The dominant colors are red and purple. The dominant shape of this area is the triangle.
Design ideas : garden lamps, barbecue, rose bushes, geraniums, etc.

- The Southeast refers to abundance, prosperity and spring. The dominant element of this area is wood associated with purple. the dominant shape is the rectangle.
Design ideas : pond with goldfish which symbolize prosperity in Asian culture. Focus on flowers such as lilacs and hyacinths.

- The South-West is associated with the couple. The dominant colors are orange for wisdom and purity, yellow for optimism but also pink for delicacy. The dominant shape of this space is the square.
Design ideas : garden furniture which symbolizes par excellence a warm living space. As for plants, bet on pansies, nasturtiums or even mimosa.

- The East symbolizes family and spring. The dominant colors are green for balance and harmony. The dominant shape is the circle.
Design ideas : a terrace to enjoy good times with the family. As for plants, prefer large trees if the space in your garden allows it or
ferns, boxwood, laurel palms.

- The West is associated with children, creativity and autumn. Metal finds its place there as well as white, gray but also bright colors. The dominant shape is the circle.
Design ideas : a swing for children, rockery, small shrubs.

Elements to prioritize

Movement being essential in a Feng Shui garden, do not hesitate to install feeders to attract birds for example.

Water is also essential for a Zen garden.

Statues and sculptures promote good energies so don’t deprive yourself of them.
