How to prepare your garden for the arrival of Spring?

Comment préparer son jardin à l'arrivée du Printemps ?

Winter tends to cause significant damage to our gardens due to the cold and bad weather.

But fortunately, the return of sunny days means renewal for our garden plants and flowers.

Yes, soon the birds will sing again, and colorful flowers and foliage will be back. Spring is about to show its face for our greatest happiness.

While waiting, it is essential to prepare your garden so you can fully and peacefully enjoy it as soon as the first warm rays of sunshine arrive.

So, follow our advice to have a perfectly blooming and tidy outdoor space as soon as the nice weather arrives.

When should you start preparing your garden for spring?

You should start getting active as early as March for a thorough spring cleaning.

We know that March doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the cold. It’s no coincidence that we talk about March showers, right?

Yet, this is the time to start, especially if you want to plant grass or new plants.

1. Deep cleaning

Prune dead or damaged branches, get rid of weeds, trim, collect leaves, clean... these will be your tasks to prepare your garden for spring like an artist preparing in the wings for the spotlight on stage.

It is especially important to properly prune your fruit trees to hope for a quality harvest when the time comes.

Your fruits, flowers, and vegetables will thank you for this care by bringing your outdoor space to its peak, because beauty is often inside, but also outside, especially in spring.

Tools: by hand, or with tools such as a hoe or a cultivator claw, or even a thermal weed burner if you have one, and pruning shears to trim your branches.

2. Prepare the soil for new plantings

Soil preparation is essential for your garden to be in perfect health. You need to nourish it so it can then nourish your plants and flowers.

Now is the time to turn the soil, to aerate it and break up clods to a depth of about thirty centimeters maximum.

Before sowing grass, you can also add compost and manure to enrich the soil.

To allow your soil to rest, it is advisable to rotate your plantings from year to year and not always plant in the same spot.

Tools: a spade, a fork, a cultivator claw, or even an aerator for large gardens.

3. Plan your garden

Once your garden is cleaned and prepared, gather all the elements that will make your outdoor space the envy of your neighbors.

Decide in advance on the layout, think about what you want to plant and where based on your plants’ water needs and sunlight exposure.

4. Plant

Don’t rush because the weather can be unpredictable and the soil remains cold even at the start of spring. Prefer May to begin the most delicate plantings (e.g., tomatoes, strawberries, annual flowers).

However, you can start preparing your plantings, especially bulbs, indoors in a pot with soil and sand. This way, they will be ready to be planted outside as soon as the warm spring days arrive.

If you want to plant directly in the ground, wait until outdoor temperatures reach at least 15 or even 20 degrees Celsius.

5. Invest in beautiful outdoor furniture

And above all, enjoy these beautiful sunny days!
